The First Band of Texas
The Texas Army Fife & Drum Corp is a unique band in that it plays songs from the early days of Texas, reminiscent of the three fifers and drummers that played at the battle of San Jacinto. For this reason we are known as the "First Band of Texas. " The Texas Army Fife & Drum Corp dresses in authentic period costume, and play original style instruments. Also reminiscent of the early unorganized nature of the Texas Army, staying in step is optional.
The Texas Army Fife & Drum Corp has performed at many historical places in Texas. These include the Alamo, San Jacinto, Washington on the Brazos, Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens, inaugural parades for Texas governors and for many private and public events. The Texas Army Fife and Drum Corp have also been called on to welcome home the missile cruiser San Jacinto on retiring from duty.
Narration, if desired, may be added to emphasize the different tunes played, their origin and historical significance. The Texas Army Fife & Drum Corp also plays tunes from the American Revolution and the War Between the States.
In times past fifers and drummers were often called upon, in war time as well as peace time, to play at flinerals as the deceased was carried to the grave by friends. Dirges were played on the way to the grave, all drums being covered in black crepe and muffled, marching at a slow march, somewhat slower than marching time. Hymns were then played at the grave site. On the return march from the grave, however, the tunes were happy and upbeat, signi~ng that due respect had been payed to the deceased, but now we must return to the living.
